Start with a complete pack photograph

Ask for a full body view, the opening or rim, the matching lid and any carrying handle. For a round pail, the wrap, label seam and attachment zones need to be visible. For a square or rectangular bucket, request adjacent faces and corners as well as the opening: a front-only picture hides how the decoration continues around the body.

A studio photograph can be useful, but a missing lid or an open pail does not prove that a complete assembly has been approved. Record what is visible and which components still need confirmation. Do not infer dimensions from a photograph without a scale and a controlled measurement method.

Verify the process for this model, not a whole brand

Injection IML positions the preprinted label in the mold before the container is formed. A printed container could instead use a sticker, sleeve or direct printing. A supplier’s IML case study for another product does not establish the process for the pictured version you intend to buy.

Request a written description that names the body model, decorated surfaces and label construction. If production footage is supplied, identify which model is running and what can actually be seen. A machine name or label robot on its own cannot prove that every quoted product uses IML.

Read real supplier demonstrations carefully

ENGEL’s October 2023 Fakuma report expressly identifies a round-pail IML application. The accompanying photograph on our round-bucket page shows two complete decorated pails with open rims. It is evidence for that named demonstration; it does not approve a lid, handle or the availability of an equivalent supplied model.

ENGEL’s June 2024 NPE report describes an IML food-container and lid application. The corresponding photograph on our container page shows actual decorated packs beside a production cell. It helps frame body-versus-lid and packing questions, while the machines and people remain an attributed external exhibition scene.

Separate body, lid and artwork approval

State whether the body, lid or both need decoration. Confirm the approved production dieline for each decorated component, including seam or overlap regions, corners, handle clearance and essential reading areas. A lid that fits the body is not necessarily decorated by the same process.

Approve text, barcode placement and the formed-pack appearance together. A flat artwork proof answers printing questions but does not show label positioning after molding. Keep the artwork revision, component references and finished sample record linked so later design changes do not silently change the approval basis.

Make the verification useful in the quotation

  • Name the proposed body, matching lid, handle and any inner seal separately.
  • State the required decoration method and decorated surfaces for the model.
  • Attach the body drawing, approved artwork revision and sample references.
  • Define inspection areas and any filling, closure or handling trials relevant to your intended use.
  • Keep unsupported material, food-contact or recyclability claims open until model-specific evidence is supplied.
  • Compare quantities per artwork, packaging, destination and sample terms on the same basis.

Purchasing questions

Can a sharp printed picture prove IML?

No. It can show decoration appearance, but the exact model needs a manufacturing description or other model-specific evidence. Printed graphics also appear on stickers, sleeves and directly printed packs.

Does a brand’s IML case prove all its buckets use IML?

No. Match the case to the exact pack version and quoted model. A brand or product family can contain different decoration constructions.

Should I ask for a lid and handle sample as well?

Yes, when those components are part of the order. An open-body photograph does not approve the fit, opening method or filled-pack handling of a complete assembly.
